Paul & Samuel, Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico, 1994
Samuel lived with his family in Monte Alban, Oaxaca, a shantytown on the dusty winding road up to the ancient Mixtec ruins, one of Oaxaca, Mexico’s main tourist attractions. Homes made of adobe, metal scraps, and mattress springs crowded the hillside. Four generations lived in Samuel’s house, a loving mother named Alejandra, her five children, Alejandra’s own parents, and her grandmother. The children’s largely absent father was an alcoholic who in a rage once took a sledgehammer to Samuel’s room, causing the walls to crumble.
I’m working on an essay about Samuel and Paul that I hope we be out soon.
